The start of a new school year is an exciting time for both children and parents. However, the key to a smooth transition and success lies in good preparation. As the saying goes, "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail." Let's explore the importance of timely preparation and provide a practical guide for parents on when and how to start preparing for the upcoming school year.
1. Reflect and Set Goals
A few weeks before school begins, take some time to reflect on your child's progress and achievements. Discuss their strengths and areas that may need improvement. Set realistic goals for the new academic year, both academically and personally, to provide direction and motivation.
2. School Supply Shopping
Yesterday, we discussed one of the first tangible steps in preparing for school, shopping for school supplies. Most schools provide a list of required items, so use this as a guide to purchase essentials such as notebooks, pens, backpacks, and other stationery. Taking advantage of back-to-school sales can also help save on costs. Check out my blog post on Target vs. Amazon school supply shopping and for more tips.
3. Organize and Label Supplies
Once the supplies are purchased, involve your child in organizing and labeling their belongings. This is a great option for a label machine and its super cute! This fosters a sense of responsibility and ownership, making them more excited about the start of school.
4. Update Medical Records and Immunizations
Check with your child's school regarding any required medical records and ensure that their immunizations are up-to-date. Complete any necessary forms, so your child is ready to participate in all school activities.
5. Review School Policies
Familiarize yourself with the school's policies and procedures. Review the student handbook, dress code, attendance rules, and any other guidelines. These are typically found on your school's or district's website. Understanding these rules beforehand can prevent misunderstandings later.
6. Establish Healthy Routines
Beginning 2-3 weeks before school starts, gradually transition your child's sleep schedule to align with school hours. My girls have been waking up around 8 am so we started setting an alarm for them 15 minutes earlier, and we plan to change it every few days moving it 15 minutes earlier each time. Reinstate healthy eating habits and encourage regular physical activity to ensure they are energized and ready to learn.
7. Set Up a Study Space
Create a dedicated study space at home, where your child can complete homework and study comfortably. Ensure it is well-lit and free from distractions. This light is a great option as it offers different light colors and brightness.
8. Meet with Teachers & Staff
Attend "Meet the Teacher" night or "New Student Orientation" to allow your student to see their school, find their new class room, meet their teacher and introduce yourself. Schedule a conference time with your child's teacher to discuss any specific concerns or goals. Establishing a positive connection early on can benefit your child's educational experience.
Effective preparation for the start of school is essential for a successful start to the school year. By starting preparations a few weeks before the start of school, parents can alleviate stress and ensure that their child is well-equipped for the new school year. From organizing school supplies to establishing healthy routines, timely preparation sets the stage for a smooth transition and a positive attitude towards learning. With parents and children working together, the start of school becomes an exciting and promising time, filled with endless possibilities for growth and achievement.
